Leeks

Leeks are related to both the garlic and the onion family. Native to the Mediterranean region, this vegetable dates back to around 4000 BC. Although its flavor and fragrance are similar to its relatives, they are slightly sweet tasting and are often served as a side dish.  Leeks are delicious sauteed or grilled.


Nutrition:  Leeks contain notable quantities of vitamin K and beta-carotene, along with healthy amounts of folic acid, B1, 2 and 3, and magnesium.  They also contain sulfur-containing compounds such as allicin which is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, antiviral and a potent free-radical scavenger.
