Basil - Sweet

Basil - Sweet

Called the "royal herb" by ancient Greeks, this annual is a member of the mint family. Fresh basil has a pungent flavor that some describe as a cross between licorice and cloves. It's a key herb in Mediterranean cooking, especially anything to do with tomatoes and is essential to the delicious Italian pesto.

Nutrition:  Basil is an excellent source of vitamin K and manganese; a very good source of copper, carotenoids such as beta-carotene, and vitamin C; and a good source of calcium, iron, folate, magnesium and omega-3 fatty acids.  Basil's proposed benefits include reducing inflammation, and it is said to have anti-aging and antibacterial properties.
